Seemed like a good idea at the time...! by nigelgreen

About

After a few half-marathons and having toyed with the idea for some time, I've managed to wangle a place in the 2009 London Marathon.  I...

  • Final Chapter...

Well, that's about it from me.  I think it's time to wrap up this story and move on to the next chapter, whatever that may be.

The 6-ish months of training that this diary has followed has seen a number of things come and go, including...

    • Several fights with Mr Snoozy, the dreaded alarm clock

    • An incident with a goose

    • Countless late evening runs, a number from which I'm surprised to have ever made it back alive

    • Ratgate

    • My predisposition for shopping and gadgets

    • more snow and ice than we've seen for years

    • an exploding aubergine

    • ...and the Marathoners breakfast from hell

It's easily exceeded my expectations to have raised a total of £2,265 for the Stroke Association, and I know this will be put to good use. Even if it makes just one small difference to one person who has been affected by the awful thing that is Stroke, then it's all been worth it.  I know that others have done fantastically with their fund raising too, so maybe by this endeavor we've all done a bit of good.

To those who have regularly left kind and supportive comments here - thank you.  I've looked forward to your responses, and have and taken a great deal from reading your blogs. The last few months have had some downsides for me that I've not lumbered everyone with on here – but the training, the event to focus on, and swapping daft stories with nice people on here has kept me going and reminded me that people are good.

So what's next for me?  Well, I'm going to keep the running going – the Crowle 10K is next week (how short that seems now!) and I'll do the Black Country Half later this year. Who knows, I'll probably won't be able to resist another marathon before too long – perhaps Edinburgh, though I'll confess that I've just had to look up how to spell it. I've also just enrolled with a Taekwondo school, this being something I hope I can share and develop together with the kids, and be something that will help develop their confidence, respect and self-discipline as they get a bit older. Who knows, might even tire them out a bit.

My final thought.  The day after the Marathon, my 8yr old son took my medal into his school for a 'show-and-tell' they do every Monday. Apparently, his class gave a round of applause for me. He was telling be about it afterwards whilst he had his tea, and gazing into his beans-on-toast said quietly, “I was really proud”.

And for that, I would have run a hundred and 26 miles.

    Bye all.

My 8 year old son wore the t- shirt that I got from the Children's Trust over his school uniform for 2 days!! By the way, he also does tae kwan do and loves it - really helped his confidence, strength and fitness so go for it. All the best, great to meet you in blogland, have really enjoyed your posts, X' added 3rd May 2009

Keep up the training and good luck with the up and coming races and we might even see you in Edinburgh - it's only a wee drive away for me. Take care.' added 3rd May 2009

    • greenc 'It's all to easy to forget what a role model we are to our children and every now and again they'll say something and you realise what an impact you have on their lives. There is no greater comment around than your own child telling you THEY are proud of you!! I bet that brought a lump to your throat. I was going to do Crowle but it's the same day as the Droitwich Rugby presentation day - bo hoo! Could have said hello. Good luck. You'll have only just warmed up and it will have ended. Happy running.' added 4th May 2009
