Have injuries - should I defer? Advice pls!

Feb0320123:58 p.m.

Am in a dilemma now - have been told not to run just now as I have two injuries in one leg: IT Band on left leg and some shin splints on left leg too. And am overseas for work for the next 14 days as well in an envrironment (Ghana!) where am not sure I'd get any running done anyway... should I defer?? I'm finding the turnaround time for London so difficult given how (for me) early it is in the new year.

Could I get some advice from all you people out there? Really not sure what to do.... :(

  • Johnf 'Both injuries are of course treatable but you will need to work hard at the right exercises to stretch and build muscle strength in the right areas. Have you seen a physio? You need good personal advice from one. The rest from running while you are out there will only help if you continue exercising in some way, gym on a bike or rowing perhaps. Good luck.' added 3rd Feb 2012

  • nomadelle 'Thanks, yes I saw a really good physio who I trust and her advice very much matches yours, which is good to hear. Hmmm! Depends if I can get something out there and stick to the strengthening regime the physio gave me I guess. Thanks for advice :)' added 3rd Feb 2012

  • shazzer 'I would not make any decisions just yet - as Johnf says rest from running whilst you are away - do the exercises from the physio and some other cardio activity and then see how you feel when you come back. ' added 3rd Feb 2012

  • Nick 'You've still got eleven weeks till the race so there's time to rest, get some treatment and then get back into training. You can leave the decision to defer till the day before the race. There's always the risk, of course, that if you defer now, then you will have the same problem next year and won't be able to defer a second time.' added 3rd Feb 2012

  • nomadelle 'thanks guys, that's probably the best idea, to wait a bit. Good luck with your running this week!' added 4th Feb 2012

  • philk 'I developed ITB when I did FLM2007, by October I was running the Great South Run (OK, a little more than 11 weeks) so it can be done, just keep up with the exercises. It seems to be a slow process but it they do work. As others have said, try to keep up some work (in Ghana? Lucky so and so) and your fitness levels won't drop too much. Then make a decision nearer the time. ' added 4th Feb 2012

  • nomadelle 'Thanks Phil, I've started doing my stretching and strengthening here in Ghana (yeah I am pretty lucky!) so we'll see what happens - here's hoping!' added 5th Feb 2012
