Practice your Hydration

Jun0520089:25 p.m.

Almost nothing can destroy a well planned race than getting dehydrated during it. Out of all the things you can control during a race, is your hydration. Drinking fluids at the right intervals and in the right quantities can easily be achieved during the Columbus Marathon, or any other marathon.

Today's marathon directors are very conscience of the need to keep participants hydrated so much so, that they provide ample aid stations and accessories to assist the runners. These can include, water spray fans, ice, cold water, and many electrolyte type drinks. The only question is have you practiced how what you will drink, when and in what quantities. Knowing your formula is essential for success.

It's not just good enough to drink when you are thirsty, this is too late. Your body needs a consistent flow of fluids throughout the race so that it is constantly remaining fueled, fed and cooled. Anything else and chances are your engine will burn out well before you have completed the 26.2 miles needed to call yourself a marathon runner. Then on Monday morning you'll have to explain why you didn't finish to your office mates who don't understand anything about running, only that you didn't finish.

So your homework as you begin training for the Columbus Marathon is to start practicing to drink.
