Running Dangerously

There is definitely something called "Running Dangerously" and it has nothing to do with running on the side of a steep mountain cliff path. This new phenomenon started with the iPod generation and continues to amaze me how runners are finding new ways to place themselves in dangerous situations.
On Saturday, I cycled by a runner who was violating two rules of the road. Firstly, the runner was running with the flow of traffic and not against it and secondly the runner was running with an iPod.
Here are the dangers of breaking these two rules.
- Always run against the flow of traffic. This will allow you to make contact with the driver in the oncoming vehicle. Once you have eye contact, you will be able to see if they are seeing you. If you see that they are gazing elsewhere start making preparations to jump, dive or step off the road. A car traveling at any speed is going to hit you like a ton of bricks. You do not want that.
- Never run on the roads with any device that takes your attention away from concentrating on the road. By using a device such as an iPod you will not be able to hear the oncoming traffic causing you to react slowly to the danger and possibly placing yourself in a life threatening situation.
The way I see it, running has two benefits. Firstly, there are the obvious health benefits that it provides. Secondly, running is an enjoyment. Take the time to reflect, take time to notice new things from a different viewpoint. Enjoy your time on the road and do not create a dangerous environment for yourself.
All of the best with your training for the Columbus Marathon.

Dungey 'Totally agree on your comments. I see plenty of runners on the road with earphones in. Personally, I like to see a car before I have to jump out of the way - that way I get chance to read the number plate.' added 10th Jun 2008
