My Piriformis and Eddie’s Ice-cream van
Every now and again I get this darn pain in my butt. Some of you may remember it first came on last September. Today, it was irritating me so I’ve been massaging my piriformis all day, and I’ll even embarrassingly admit to sitting on my Vaseline tin earlier to see if that helped,
strangely it did!! I had to strategically position myself but seems I am doing a lot of strange things at the moment. My colleagues have stopped asking questions. The tin actually helped a lot!!
10 months ago, I didn’t know I had a piriformis, in fact I didn’t even know what the piriformis is; today I am not only able to tell you where it is, but I am also able to tell you how to find it, stretch it and how to massage it. This evening I’m back to more conventional methods of massage - the foam roller. I love my foam roller but my foam roller hates me! It can bring tears to my eyes.
Managed my reluctant 7 mile run home from the office. Wasn’t wholly enthused by the prospect but needs must, at least I remembered my winter warmers. And WTS – it certainly does have to start warming up soon, what is wrong with this winter? Surely it should have buggered off by now!
After the first mile, my boredom had hugely increased; despite my fear of what speed work could bring on, I threw caution to the wind and did a few miles of fartlek running to get me home faster. It might otherwise have taken me 2hours as opposed to just over 1. And there’s a bucket load of ice in my freezer waiting! Clear pavements meant go fast, crowds meant slow down. That works! I have some nice speedy miles recorded today, 8.55, 8.25, 9.02, 9.07 – they probably would have taken me 11 mins each if I just plodded. I wore my HRM today too (I don’t wear it much these days) can you tell I was ensuring I had things to help me through my run? I now have new stats to analyse. I noticed that my heart rate came down very quickly everytime I had to stop at traffic lights, which I found fascinating. Will do some comparisons from earlier runs.
Finally watched the first episode of Eddie Izzard Marathon Man. How inspiring is he? I was amazed at how well he did especially with all those blisters, and that ITB stripping - OWWWWW!! Do you think I could arrange to have my own ice-cream van at the end of VLM? The sight of it might make me run a bit faster, then again any finish line makes me run a bit faster!
Just looked in my inbox and there are a gazillion blogs to read. I need sleep so will catch up soon! Night all.

Way_Too_Slow 'I've heard that foam rollers were much used during the Spanish Inquisition because of their ability to reduce people to tears!! Good running today, nice steady splits. An ice cream van at the finish? Oh yes please!! Next to the beer lorry!!' added 11th Mar 2010

glen_b 'A fellow here, who loves Eddie Izzard, and also enjoys a half hour run every lunchtime, went and joined Eddie for an hour somewhere between Chesterfield and Matlock during his mega run. I am not a fan personally, but I have sky plussed the 2 episodes so far, I will watch them when the wife is busy doing something else, she is bored of hearing about training and running marathons!!!' added 12th Mar 2010

michael_h 'Good 7 mile run, very innovative to turn it into a fartlek run. I find monitoring my heart rate really useful; if you use it over the same run, it can be a good indicator as to how your fitness is progressing.' added 12th Mar 2010

Account_closed 'We watched the second Eddie Izzard episode last night. He must have some serious mental strength to do something like that. I'm knackered after yesterday, and couldn't even face a 10K let alone another marathon (not that I even managed 26miles yesterday !!).' added 14th Mar 2010
