First Race of the Year

I don't really follow any training plan. That's not arrogance on my part (I certainly don't know better than the experts) but when I've tried I've failed to balance work, family life, all other responsibilities and following a running plan. I've then ended up getting discouraged and not enjoying the running. So now I just do what I can. Whilst marathon training I aim to do one hill intervals session, one speed session, a 'medium length' run and the long run each week - perhaps 35-40 miles in total - but with no plan pinned to the wall I don't get too hung up about missing a run. I've also learnt that sometimes a few days off does far more good.
So although this week has been a very low mileage week I'd like to think the 'break' has done me good. Being half term I had a few days off and didn't get to run until Wednesday lunchtime. 6.5 miles in I was feeling a nagging pain in my left ankle - I was on the treadmill so called it a day there. Thursday/Friday/Saturday we had some good family days out - no running and I was a bit concerned as to whether my ankle would be ok for this morning's Wokingham half. As it turned out it was a bit sore miles 3-5 but I seemed to run through it and was able to maintain close to a steady 7min/mile pace throughout to finish in 1:32:07 - 5 seconds outside my best for the course. Felt pretty strong at the end (except for one blister - all my fault not checking the socks and shoes properly beforehand due to the miserable weather conditions). To all who ran at Wokingham - congratulations - hope no one sank in the mud encircling the baggage tent!
