The 2010 updated intro:

My name is Maija Bissett, a 30something mum of two from Cambs. I was born and bred in Finland. Came to UK in 1997 to a do a degree in Newcastle University and whilst up there, met the love of my life and here I am!

After training for and running the 2007 Great North Run, I got hooked on running. Again. I was into running big time when I was younger and competed in 100m and 200m events at a quite high level. But since studying, entering working life and having kids, I didn't seem to have the time or the motivation. But during the training, I fell in love with running all over again!I enjoy taking part in events where I aim to beat my last PB!

It has been hard to get my head around long distance running and training, as my brain very often tells me to run like a wind and I have only started a long run...It's the sprinter in me that wants to run flat out! I think I am getting there! But the tortoise is slowly becoming a hare...

My family thinks this is how my mid-life crisis is manifesting itself! Well, better to run, get fit than buy a sports car! Or spend fortunes at therapy! Tongue out

In January 2010 my beloved aunt was diagnosed with Alzheimer's. My godfather, who is my 'second dad' also has Alzheimer's. I have decided to push myself even more this year and have set myself of a goal of running 250 km in organised races this year and raising £250 for the Alzheimer's Society. My website is:

http://www.justgiving.com/Maija-Bissett

My goals for 2010 are:

  • To loose 10-15 kg
  • to run 10K under 60 minutes

Back to business

I would like to say a huge thank you to you all for kind words. It has really meant a lot! Living abroad, away from family is especially hard when people die. I have my home here and my family are here – with my physically at home and here, in our lovely realbuzz community! I am so fortunate to have found this place!

This week has been an ok week. I feel sad but I am very glad and privileged to have known this wonderful woman.

So - Back to “business”…

After a good night’s sleep on Monday, I woke up to Tuesday as a new person. And went for a quick run. I needed to calibrate my iPod and Nike+ SportBand. I ran only a kilometre but mission accomplished! I felt better for it.

Little man started pre-school and I was ‘confined’ to the house all day. We had a call out time of 8am to 5pmto get our cavity walls insulated. I was not impressed that the company didn’t give me any more specific time than that. It was a total pain to be stuck at home all day when I could have been running errands…but in the end we got our cavity wall insulated for £99 and the house is feeling warmer!

On Thursday I had to take both kids to their respective schools – son’s pre-school is a brand new one, only opened on Monday! – And then came home, did some paperwork and then headed out for a run. I ran for 30 minutes. I felt ok to start with but as the run progressed, my stomach started to hurt. I had an apple earlier that did not agree with me. So will avoid them pre-run now! I got back and showered and was on time to pick little man up at 11.30am. Him being at pre-school two mornings a week will give me just the time I need to go for a run or the gym. Or both!

I have avoided the gym and swimming this week. I have mentioned how I have had pain in my neck. I have irritated some nerve or muscle and decided to just run until the end of season half marathon. And after that, gradually go back to both. I have been able to move my neck more without pain all week so it’s working. And running hasn’t brought the pain back either!

Yesterday we went to visit a potential school for my daughter and she now really wants to go there. Only minus is the cost of tuition! Why can’t the state provide as good education as the private schools! Ridiculous! She was really funny when the headmaster was talking to us about the variety of sport they do. He mentioned athletics and I felt a persistent tapping on my arm. I turned to her and she said with a huge grin ‘”mummy, they do athletics here!” I think that made her mind up!

This morning Dawn and I went for a run around the Grafham Water. We did nearly 9 miles in 1h 40min and felt good. Two weeks we both felt bad but today it was a different ball game altogether. It was great. The weather was absolute spot on! Just a perfect autumnal day! We are running the local Riverside Half Marathonnext Sunday. Despite its name, it does not go near the river! We’ll aim to finish and if I get a new PB, bonus! I doubt it but you never know! I am running again on Tuesday morning with her and then do a quick run on Thursday whilst little man is at the pre-school!

I have been looking back at this year’s running as I went over a magical threshold with my Nike+ - I have run over 1000 kilometres since having my Nike+ gadgets! Go me! I think I need to space my races more and have been looking at the local scene. Advance Performance has its own A1 series that are open to all abilities so will be taking part in them next year. I have few big national races to come and then there is the big one – whether or not I will tackle the New York Marathon!

When I was 18 or 19, my best friend and I had a conversation of our futures late one night. We talked about what we were going to do after our A level’s and where we wanted to be when we were 30. We decided to run the NYC marathon – it was a mad idea at the time! We both were the sprinting queens of our local athletics club and we laughed at the idea of running 42 kilometres when 200m was our top distance! Unfortunately my best friend never saw her 30th birthday and the year I turned 30, I returned to running and completed my first ever half marathon. Now, the idea has been at the back end of my brain all this time. And now I have a chance to do it. It is there, on a proverbial silver plate, tempting me! I am still discussing with my husband and waiting to hear back from my friend, whether she would come to New Yorkwith me. She wouldn’t run but just for company! She went to New York with her friends but never did anything one should do there! So I said we should go together and have now asked to come with me if I go next year!

I also think spacing races more over the course of the year will keep me in better shape and I will have no excuse to not to run! There won’t be too many half marathons – more 5k and 10k’s! And hopefully I will avoid the exhaustion I felt few weeks ago!

Happy running!

What a great goal, I would love to do New York marathon. A good steady build up with a few half marathons thrown in should see you on the start line.
Good luck with the Half

Sorry to hear about your mum's loss.

You'll love NY if you do it. Just make sure you get some hill training in. Maybe don't read my race report though before you sign up, don't want to put you off!
