Passing - and not failing - a speed trap

Forgot to mention on Saturday's blog that the weather was lovely on Friday for the long run.  Temperatures about 10 degrees and sunny all the way.  Glorious !

The jiggery-pokery of the training schedule continued for the rest of last week ... did all the sessions but not in the suggested order !  At least I did the miles, though, and that's the main thing.  Rested on Saturday (didn't feel too bad after the Friday long run), and a steady 3 miles on Sunday morning.  Had to do it in the morning due to other commitments (and also chose to bring one of next week's 3 mile runs forward for the same reason), and I have to say that getting up when I'd normally be enjoying a Sunday lie-in (even if only for 3 miles) was a test of commitment !  Last week's schedule in full is at the bottom of this post.

Felt quite full on Sunday night after a very nice Sunday lunch out, though didn't sleep well and woke up on Monday morning with a stomach upset.  This developed during the day into stomach cramps, shivering and aching.  By the time I got home from work at lunchtime all I was fit for, was lying on the sofa under a duvet with the heating on full whack watching highlights of the previous night's Superbowl and falling asleep every couple of hours.  Not a hope in hell of cross training or running I'm afraid.  This puts me behind on my ideal schedule (subbing one day's rest per week for cross training), but as it's written I'll just use one of the rest days as an 'ill' day.  It certainly didn't feel too much like rest.

Amazing what an early night and a hefty dose of paracetemol will do though !  Woke up this morning (Tuesday) feeling ok and was absoutely fine by 6am.  Miracle !  Very odd, though ... going from feeling terrible yesterday afternoon to perfectly ok about 16 hours later.  Glad it passed fairly quickly though as I was starting to worry about missed miles.

Set out for today's 3 miles with the intention of taking it steady.  Did so for the first mile and a half or so.  Everything was feeling ok at that point, so thought I'd up the pace a little bit and turn it into a mini tempo run.  Did the 'middle mile' at a pace of  8mins 18 -- at last, something approaching half marathon pace (8 mins 15) !  The decision to run a bit quicker was totally unrelated to something that had happened a few moments beforehand, by the way, and felt ok.  More of that it a moment,  The only downside of today's run was the revenge of the skin-shredding running trousers.  We're beginning to fall out.  And so close to Valentine's Day, too.

I'd been following a lady running along the Myton Road for 5 minutes or so when I spotted her passing a couple of police officers carrying out a speed trap.  I noticed them saying something to her, and when I passed them about 30 seconds later, they said "she's doing 5 mles an hour".  I replied "well at least we won't be getting a ticket then !".  In hindsight, I could have  taken issue with them.  I trust my GPS watch more than their speed gun (for human traffic at least).  5mph is the equivalent of 12 minute miles, and my watch reckoned we were doing about 9.5 minute miles at the time.  That's at least 1.3mph quicker !  Humph !  Perhaps I shouldn't have taken them literally ...
