Running - a hypchondriac's dream ?!

Feb0620101:56 p.m.

I've decided that if you're the sort of person who worries about every ache and pain, that runnung is the ideal pastime.  Sure, you'll get lots of those aches and pains but it's then the perfect excuse to worry, over-analyse, blog, google and talk in chat rooms about them !

I decided this about 8 miles into my long run yesterday (Friday), when I realised that the niggles of the past week (ankle and glutes mainly), weren't giving me too much jip and that I was running fairly steadily.  It was 12 miles in all, so I did the canal towpath to Shrewley.  When I was doing this route just before the Coventry Half last year, the last section just before the Shrewley tunnel was really muddy, so I was expecting it to be even worse ! It was actually far, far better.  Perfect surface in fact.  The bits of canal nearer Warwick were far muddier, though not quite as bad as Monday !  Trainers seemed to escape fairly mud-free ... which is more than can be said for my socks !  See below ....

So to the start of the hydration strategy.  Runners' World recommends drinking your drink of choice (sadly, not a nice pint of foaming bitter) every 45 mins, so I did that with Lucozade sport today, as that's what'll be on offer at the London marathon.  All seemed ok.

Legs very tired by the end of the run but I kept on track with the pace I was hoping for, so that was good news.  Not quite sure how I'm going to manage to add another 14 miles onto that run  for the marathon but looking at Twitter, I'm not alone by any means.

That's precisely the reason I also need to stop beating myself up that I'm not running as quickly as I was before the half.  This is all about getting to 26 miles, not how quickly I get there !

Thought I'd put the split times up just to show myself I am running steadily.  Don't know why mile 7 was so slow ...it's mile 6 that has that horrible uphill drag from the canal towpath to Shrewley village -- mile 7 is back down that slope ... so downhill for at least half of it !

Summary 12 miles 01:58:52
1 00:09:45
2 00:09:44
3 00:09:46
4 00:10:06
