To gym or not to gym..

That is the question.
A new gym has just opened in town that is offering really reasonable membership rates and I'm very tempted to join 
Have been told that doing cross-training will really help boost my performance when running. Hitting the gym will be beneficial. Also it's getting colder and if it snows/rains heavily, then I can use the treadmill. However I'm just a bit wary of not wanting to overdo it... I run 3 times a week at the moment and I understand that it's important to have rest days.
So I'm just wondering how your experiences of running and going to the gym have been? If I decide to join, how many days a week should I gym so I can get the benefits without overdoing it too much? What exercises are beneficial?

SuperCaz 'You can combine the two, but try to use different muscles on different days so that you get rest days. So you could run on Monday, swim on Tuesday, go spinning on Wednesday, do Body Pump on Thursday... You can also start to think about doing two sessions on one day. You can either do one in the morning and one in the evening, so do two back to back. If you chose to go this route then make sure that you start with shorter sessions that usual - maybe 2 x 30 min sessions to replace 1 x 60 min and then gradually build it up. If you do this then you can work the same muscles twice in the same day. Do some leg weights, squats and lunges, followed by a run. Or a Body Pump class followed by a swim. Classes such as pilates or yoga can be done at any time as they tend to concentrate on the core rather than the arms or legs. This is probably the best form of cross training that you can do as a strong core (thats your back as well as your stomach) will help you to hold an efficient form when you get tired at the end of a run.' added 15th Dec 2011
