week three and lucozade dilemas

Last week was lots of cross training and little running, this week was very little cross training but lots of running, 24 miles to be precise which is my highest ever. That of course includes the fact I delayed my Sunday LSR of 8m til Tuesday, as well doing the usual LSR of 10m in the right place.

The 10 felt significantly harder than the 8, although okay still (and I still managed to drive 100 miles only an hour or so later without stiffening up) but afterwards I realised why it was harder. I did the 8 on lucozade (I think) and the 10 on water. I'm a bit confused as to what approach to take to fueling my long runs now. I took lucozade on every run of 8m (actually the 8 might have been a freebie of lucozde lite) and longer (which was only 4 runs) during my half mara training, simply to get used to the product and give me a bit of a boost as I was behind schedule and needed all the help I could get. My marathon training plan was to cut back on using it until I get to bigger mileage (maybe 12m) to train my body to burn fuel efficiently, because if I need it at 8m I'm going to struggle with 26.2m. But on the other hand, if it helps me recover quicker, I'll be able to train better the next day, or even just be more active / less tired in the few hours following a LSR. I'm also trying to lose weight so am reluctant to take on unneccessary calories, although it's only 140 per bottle, which is burned off in just over a mile, but I feel like I'm cheating by taking it.

I'm having an easy week this week as it's half term and my childcare options have gone out the window, but I hate it as I'm feeling lazy and don't even want to go to the gym today, which is my one and only chance to exercise this week.

  • Keith_L 'Personally I dont take anything on runs up to about 14/16 miles and if drinking will only use water. There is lots of tehory and science and not all of it conclusive but teh human body should be able to run 90-120 minutes without extra fuel. I am not sure drinking lucozade on teh run will help your recovery at all (cant think of a scientific reason why it should) as its more to do with how you cool down and what nutrition you take in after run that will help.' added 27th Oct 2011

  • Johnf 'Keith is right in that you can run, assuming you are well hydrated and carbed up, for at least 90 minutes on nothing. But I do think when you get past 10 miles you probably need a drink to stay hydrated. Lucozade does give you a carb top up but also importantly replace some of the salts you lose from sweat. The other good thing about drinking it is getting used to it so that during a marathon when it really can help, it doesn't make you gag. Well till the end when you will be sick of it. I drink milk after a long run to help recovery.' added 27th Oct 2011

  • xSASSx 'thank you, both. I might see how I feel about doing my 12m next week on water, maybe going later in the day so I have breakfast and lunch in the belly. For the record my 8m took 90 mins and the 10m was a shade under 2 hours, so that sort of distance is in the time zones you both mentioned. In terms of aiding recovery I just meant feeling less tired during / after a run. One of my problems is not feeling able to eat for about an hour, sometimes two after I get back.' added 27th Oct 2011

  • shazzer 'My runs are starting to get to the 90mins plus stage and I was also wondering what to take on the run - had more or less decided to just stick to water until I get to 2 hours and then try lucozade and gels. It might be worthwhile you trying some of the recovery shakes after your run. ' added 29th Oct 2011
