As the location for frequent international trade fairs, conferences and festivals, Berlin has seen a massive growth in travel and temporary accommodation in recent times. As soon as you have your marathon place confirmed, you need to get on the case and get yourself a booking, as everywhere will fill up quickly. The greatest concentration of hotels lies in the centre near the Kurfürstendamm (Ku'damm), the main boulevard of western Berlin. Most good value small and 'pensions' hotels are located in the western part of the city, whereas the luxury and business hotels tend to be in Mitte. The more inexpensive hotels are in the outlaying areas such as Charlottenburg, Schöneberg, or Kreuzberg. Eastern Berlin has some very chic hotels around the historic city centre – several first–class and deluxe hotels have opened there in more recent years.
Accommodation in Berlin is generally spotless, even in the most budget-friendly of premises, and one bonus is that wherever you stay you're nearly always guaranteed a lavish breakfast to start your day, as is the German way!
