There's no date in the event calendar quite like the Sydney Marathon.
From the moment you stand on the start line in the shadow of North Sydney Oval to the unforgettable finish on the forecourt of the world-famous Sydney Opera House, the TCS Sydney Marathon is more than just a race; it's one of the greatest sporting spectacles on earth.
Following a multi-year assessment, the TCS Sydney Marathon has officially joined the elite ranks as the seventh Abbott World Marathon Major. Alongside legendary races like London, Boston, and New York, Sydney is now a bucket-list destination for marathoners worldwide.
Whether you're running your first marathon, were lucky enough to secure a spot through the ballot, or you're taking on the challenge to raise funds for a cause close to your heart, here's everything you need to know about the TCS Sydney Marathon 2027.
The Sydney Marathon route is globally renowned for its breathtaking beauty, starting on the North Shore and weaving past some of the most recognisable landmarks on the planet.
The race begins on Miller Street in North Sydney, directly echoing the starting line of the historic Sydney 2000 Olympic Games Marathon.
Within the first few kilometres, you’ll tackle the highlights of the whole Sydney Marathon route - crossing the Sydney Harbour Bridge. With traffic completely shut down, you'll run across the deck with the sparkling harbour and the sails of the Opera House spread out before you.
Once you hit the south side of the bridge, the route winds through the historic Rocks district and into the high-energy streets of the Sydney Central Business District.
From the city centre, you'll head down Anzac Parade, a long, wide, straight stretch of road that lets runners lock into their target pace. You'll pass through Taylor Square, the lively Pride in Sport live site, before entering the green, tranquil loop of Centennial Park between kilometres 30 and 34.
As you exit the park and head back towards the harbour, you'll face the race's toughest mental and physical hurdle: a late-stage climb up Art Gallery Road near Mrs Macquarie's Chair around the 40km mark. Dig deep here! Once you scale this challenge, the final kilometre is a glorious, sweeping downhill along Macquarie Street, taking you straight to the finish line on the spectacular Sydney Opera House Forecourt.
Now that the Sydney Marathon is a World Major, securing a spot in the public ballot is harder than ever. Running for charity is not only one of the most reliable ways to guarantee your place on the start line, but it also gives your run a purpose.
By committing to fundraise, you turn your training miles into life-changing support for incredible organisations. At realbuzz, we partner with leading charities to help passionate runners secure guaranteed entry.
Sydney isn’t particularly known for its speed; however, due to recent route revisions which have removed some of the tighter turns and steep climbs, it is now faster than it was but still remains a tactical course. The course has a mixture of ups and downs, with a net elevation drop of 83 meters. The biggest drop comes early as you fly down off the Harbour Bridge, while the toughest climb is saved for the 40km mark. Because the course gently fluctuates throughout, it requires smart pacing. If you respect the hills and save your legs for the final 10km, a personal best is absolutely within reach.
The Sydney Marathon 2027 will take place in August 2027, with the main race starting at approximately 6:30am local time to beat the midday sun.
The course has a strict 7-hour cut-off time from the crossing of the start line. Organisers also enforce rolling cut-offs at various checkpoints along the route to reopen roads safely.
Yes! The generous 7-hour cut-off, impeccable organisation, world-class medical support, and roaring crowds make it a great first marathon choice.
Late August is the transition from winter to spring in Sydney. Runners can generally expect cool, crisp morning temperatures starting around 8–11°C, warming up to a comfortable 17–19°C in the afternoon with moderate humidity.
Whether you are aiming to tick off your very first Major, earn a historic finisher's medal, or experience the pure joy of running across the Sydney Harbour Bridge, there has never been a better time to take on this challenge.
With 41,000 runners, unmatched spectator support, and a finish line that concludes at the majestic steps of the Opera House, the Sydney Marathon 2027 is waiting for you.
