Whatever next?
In April 2013 "It started with a click" , kept a log of what I was feeling and doing as I went from infrequent HM runner to a marathon runner at VLM14.
It continued from there, more marathons, Snowdonia PB then to 2015 and the love of trails. Miles grew culminating in the Cotswold Way 102 with Gloshawk in the September.
A neccesary, but unloved, return to roads in spring 2016 to prove to myself what I could achieve saw new PBs for 5k, HM & Marathon.
So on with the story......

Well I ended the last blog mentioning that the stats don’t tell the true story and my last two Sunday’s have reinforced that.
The midweek running has been replaced by long days in the office, and the last two Saturdays have also been worked. I’m not com...
Boing! Boing! Boing!
Boing! Boing! Boing!
Boing! Boing! Boing!
That’s the sound of me bouncing back. Thank you all for your comments to the last blog, they all helped me with some much needed perspective, but thanks to a certain Ben Smith (and Vicki Par...
I wrote 2 blogs ago about how the pain associated with our running quickly gets forgotten whilst the feeling of accomplishment grows to fill that space and warms the body like a great big Hollywood hug.
Well I’m writing this now, as soon as I can after ...
So three weeks after the Mendip Marauder 50, the Green Man Ultra “Midnight Express” 45 miler was being run and just like last year I was a late entrant. Last year it had been a “training run” ahead of the CW102, this time I was doing it because of a num...
<For those reading for the first time: Welcome to Realbuzz. I took up running in earnest in Spring 2013 and after a focus on road running marathons in 2014, shifted to the trails and ultra running in 2015, which included Rok the Stones, Green Man (an...
Re-reading my last blog, there was a certain amount of anxiety about my preparation for the Mendip Marauder 50. I’m pleased to say I have been following (not for the first time) the mantra of Chairman Jim and “Controlling the Controllables”.
Last Friday...
10 days ago I entered the Mendip Marauder 50 miler along the East and then West Mendip way – Frome to Uphill near Weston Super Mare, via Shepton Mallet, Wells & Cheddar, on the 6th August.
I’d always said I would keep the legs “ticking over” with s...
Oh boy, it has been a long, long time since I blogged. I noted notifications ceased a month ago so I know I have loads to read, but I just have to write this first or it will never get done.
I’ll start with a little bit of current affairs, not politics,...
Saturday morning, the usual pre-race rituals are interrupted by a demand to enter the “beauty parlour”, a minute of bartering with the 5 year old daughter of my best mate sees a compromise struck. No make up to be applied but they (the daughter / parlou...
Evening all
As the blogs are almost a diary for me I’m squeezing in a quick review of the last week, I’m doing so whilst eating the now customary large portion(s) of macaroni cheese, for tomorrow it’s ultra time, 34 miles over the Malvern Hills and whil...
Phew! What a whirlwind the last few weeks have been. Well done to everyone who toe'd the line in their challenges, from Parkrun to Marathon. The winter of training gets compressed into but a few hours of delivery & accomplishment and then it has pas...
Indulge me if you will with a little back history.
I started this blog moments after I had entered the VLM ballot in April of 2013. VLM 2014 was special, it was my first marathon so how could it be anything other than special?
Well after the elatio...
Just a quick one as bags are packed and a drive to Manchester beckons.
All lights green, taper runs all ticked off, I always wonder whether a 20 min run is really that important, but this morning it helped prove all those little niggles are, well just t...
Well I’ve caught up with all the blogs, 4 pages worth since my last blog. March is the peak month for spring marathon training and looks like there is a strong correlation to blogs coming in. They cover the spectrum, whether veterans or novices, the rol...
Hawkesbury Upton 5k
Hawkesbury 5k entries now open http://hu5k.org/ 18th June 11am with plenty of boarding room available from village buzzers and plenty of pre and post run food, drink and general good cheer (so really the run is just an excuse, feel...
The title does not indicate a short hill rep session or the usual flow of a trail run on the Cotswold Way. It indicates my motivation and no surprise the quality of the associated runs. Reading through a few other blogs, it seems I'm not alone.

Last week turned out to be a really good week, I had no preconception that it would, which made it even better.
On the work front, whilst very busy, the project kick off I organised went down a treat, loads of positive comments from both fellow Pukka pe...
Blimey where did those two weeks go?
Work has been busy, a new project is underway and in order to have the time to focus on it, along with a couple of other projects, I’ve been shuffling responsibilities around. This in itself takes time, so whilst in ...
Thanks for all the comments on my last blog, I'm fairly certain the mud is probably a whole lot worse, ore completely submerged by now. All things considered (and by that I mean despite the weather and having run a marathon on Saturday) it has been a re...
So week 5 continued with a tempo run on Thursday (21st Jan), 5 miles at 7 min mile pace. From the frosty Tuesday run the weather had turned mild again, so on with the big head torch and out on the back lanes. I ticked off the run at just below the targe...
In local news….
The owner (not the tenant) of our village shop has decided to sell the building, it’s a key community asset and so it was not surprising that loads turned out to an open meeting to hear about it. We’ve set up a working group and I’m head...
So Mr G has turned from the silent partner to a very active one and has settled back into the active role with alarming ease, regularly telling me what to do. I both love him and hate him in this bossy role.
You see on the trails he is just noting the p...
Thanks for all the comments on my last post, the blues have passed and I'm just back into training (more on that later).
I've just updated my "About" section, pretty straight forward, roll most of the targets over from 2015 to 2016. Yep, didn't achieve ...
I'm bloody annoyed with myself.
Whilst panto rehearsals and performances reduced available run times, and a crappy cold has reduced capability, the naked truth I have to face is that I have lost my love of running.
On Friday I hoped to find it, somewher...
