Scarlet Runner

Having been a 'lurker' on realbuzz for a couple of years now, I have finally succumbed to the nagging (erm.........'gentle persuasion' sounds better!) of various people, and come to join you. Although I'm not doing VLM, I thought I would park my blog here, as this is where I feel most at home. I hope you don't mind. A bit about me: I live in Luzern, in Switzerland; I started running more or less by accident at 40; it's gone through the odd thin patch, but 14 years later.......... I'm still running. It did take me over 12 years to get round to doing a marathon - I always maintained that it was something I didn't need or want to do, but joked that if Luzern ever got its own marathon, I would give it a go (thinking this would never happen............ but it did!) So, first marathon at 53; found it not too horrible, so did it again a year later. Definitely not too horrible! - might have to do another.........! (Probably like half marathons best, though: 15 of them at the last count.) I originally had quite an ambitious programme planned out for this year, but between work and an achilles problem, it had to be pruned down fairly radically. The blog was originally going to be called 'K31' after a race - part of the Swiss Alpine Marathon - I planned to do in July, but that idea had to be shelved, this year at least. So I ended up doing 2 half marathons instead, and have another at the end of August. That will do as an objective for now. Beyond that.......... don't know yet. (Perhaps I should also mention that I am one of the most chronically indecisive people on the planet!) And finally........... I have approximately 2 hours left to be 54, so maybe I'll write a birthday blog tomorrow. Maybe.

Since I wrote the above, not one but two birthdays have come and gone. There has been no marathon this year, but a couple more half marathons, and a few other races as well............. including, finally, K31 (which I loved.) Alas, I seem to be getting slower! - this is not how it is supposed to be! (But I'm working on it.) I've also bought an E-bike, done a lot of walking, and aqua-jogged some dull km (faut de mieux............) Endured a very long, very cold, very snowy winter, and made the most of an entirely mediocre summer; learnt to love hills (sometimes); got to grips with my Garmin; sprained my ankle, but otherwise managed to stay remarkably injury-free (even the achilles is much, much better now); lost my running protégée (but may have found another); watched some great events in fantastic surroundings; and reached my 15th Runniversary.

And now..............? What challenge shall I tackle next? I don't know. Can't decide. Plus ça change.............! (And for the first time ever, I've used the cedille on my keyboard!) But watch this space.

A good week

54 kms last week - pretty pleased with that. It's not in the same league as some, I know (our magnificent Woodwoses, to name but two), but it is the most I've achieved so far this year. Not without cost - my knees were somewhat painful at the end of it,...

Encounters with animals

Continuing the catch-up: Thursday 19 Feb: with some slightly unfamiliar aching muscles (feet, ankles, calves.......) after Tuesday's snow walk, I decided to check on the state of the woods. As expected, pretty icy. Plan A - up the side of the woods to O...

Snow and sun

Sorry for the lack of comments recently - it's been one of those weeks with not a lot of slack in it! (Premiere of 'La Boheme' last night, with all the rehearsals leading up to it.) A bit behind with the blogging too, but will try to get caught up. Tues...

Running, walking, and water

A good mixture of training in the past few days: running, aqua jogging, and walking. I have to ration the running a bit, as thanks to the continuing icy conditions, it has to be nearly all on road, and my knees are not altogether impressed. Still, as lo...

Starting again

Today saw my first run in over 2 weeks. Chief culprit in this lapse was a very persistent cold, aided and abetted by sub-zero temperatures, wind, snow, ice, freezing fog, and the resulting general fed-up-ness. I rarely get colds, and when I do, they're ...

Fifty Shades of Grey............

..........just about describes the weather we've been having recently. (What, were you expecting something else?!) Several days of that damp, foggy, heavy cold that makes the bones ache; days that hardly bother to get light. Sometimes it threw in some r...

100

Wednesday 21 Jan: 2015 is now 3 weeks old, and I'm up to 100 kms. Before I start feeling too proud of this achievement, I've since seen that Gaelle has done more than that in ONE WEEK! - amazing! But still not too shabby for a Mouldy Oldy with dodgy kne...

The first 50

Kms of 2015, that is. 50 kms accomplished in the first 8 days of January (well actually, 51.23): 5 days' running, 1 walking, 2 rest days. Pretty happy with that, though my knees don't necessarily agree.........! Thursday 1 Jan: A short but tricky run in...

A 'normal' New Year

The days are getting longer. No, they really are! - I checked! I noticed this evening that it still seemed quite light at quarter to 5, whereas a couple of weeks ago, it was already getting dark at half past 4. Okay, weather conditions/cloud cover proba...

Snow Run

Christmas has come and gone once more, and I'm enjoying a few peaceful days until New Year. Seriously unseasonal weather in the lead-up to it - 'White Christmas' never seemed less appropriate. Squeezed in a couple of runs (Friday 19th, and Christmas Eve...

I had a dream...........

A dream about Realbuzz! I was on my way to a 'Realbuzz picnic', but had only a very vague idea of where it was and how to get there. Arriving at a place called 'Hawksbury', I bethought me of Chairman Jim........... ah, it must be here. True, it looked n...

Rabbicorn!

Rob, what have you started?! After your boot-shaped run, and speculations on the possibilities of further Garmin artwork, I checked out the shape of my run last Friday.......... and found that - with a generous helping of imagination - it looked rather ...

Running off the fondue!

Another ridiculously busy spell of work meant that running continued to get short shrift over the past couple of weeks, but with the St. Nicholas concert now out of the way (so much time and effort for a one-off!), I'm trying to get back into it. To thi...

Just (barely) ticking over......

This time 2 years ago, I was subjecting myself to a 50+ km-per-week regime (78 kms, one week!) in the increasingly desperate attempt to reach 2012 kms by the end of the year. Somehow I made it, and didn't fall apart in the process; mentally it was very ...

Transviamala

Apologies for the delay in producing this report. Life turned busy again........... and then it seemed only right to leave the stage to the Snowdonia heroes for a while. Anyway, having survived both the evil spirits and the million steps (perhaps I exag...

'parkrun', hills, and long(ish)

After Sunday's high excitement (what a bunch of stars!), it was time for some action of my own, albeit less starry. Parkrun for starters - well, our 'fantasy parkrun' à deux, twice round Allmend. An easy 3 km trot over there through the woods, then the ...

And now it's October

Sorry to have been such a sporadic contributor recently - life has been unexpectedly busy again, and it just got squeezed out. (Along with regular running, alas - though I've fitted some in 'as and when'.) Roundup of the last 3 weeks: Friday 19 Septembe...

Mini-holiday

After a very work-dominated few weeks, I felt we deserved a little break, and two free days together provided just the opportunity. J. is notoriously difficult to convince that it's okay (even normal) to take a couple of days away from work and have som...

Into September

Still behind on the blogging, and no excuse now! The last 2 weeks of August, still at full-stretch with work. 4 outings in the Bireggwald, but only one of them of any particular note. J had at some point acquired some terracotta tiles as samples, and th...

That will teach me!

As of this week, I'm reclaiming my life! Premiere and 2 performances survived, 5 more to go, but not until the end of September. Theatre Open Day also survived.......... more or less. Despite the negative mood I approached it with, I admit it actually t...

Warning: very boring post

August has been a dead loss for running, thanks to a truly insane work schedule taking up a lot of my time and all of my energy. But the end is finally in sight: final dress rehearsal on Monday, premiere on Wednesday, performances on Friday and Sunday, ...

Seriously soggy Switzerland

Meanwhile, back in Switzerland.......... it had done nothing but rain. (The wettest July since records began, I read somewhere.) Nor did it stop just because I had Plans (mostly involving mountain walking) for my last few days of freedom before hell set...

Parkruns and others

Work is currently still taking up far too much of my time, and when I've had chance, I wanted to watch the athletics, so nothing much else has had a look-in recently. Apologies therefore for the lack of comments. I've just had a quick blitz through rece...
